Hoodoo Highball consists of four members from Charleston, SC, that have been integral parts of the bedrock of the local and regional music scene since the 1970’s. Mike Sullivan – bass, vocals – and Howie Ferguson – drums, vocals – started several bands that eventually morphed into Acropolis, and soon afterwards added David Eade – keyboards, guitar, vocals. Acropolis quickly became the most popular band in the Charleston area and eventually outgrew the local scene and hit the road in 1978, traveling in a customized Greyhound bus. In addition to Mike, David, and Howie, members of Acropolis included local favorites Johnny Mac and Ronnie Garvin. Acropolis was inducted into the Lowcountry Music Hall of Fame in 2022. In the meantime, John Tobin – guitar, vocals – was blowing people away with his talent in bands such as fusion band Quick, and party bands 9th Row, 17 South, The Rivieras, as well as with Lowcountry Music Hall of Famers Second Wind.
After Acropolis broke up in 1980, David toured with The Grass Roots, while Howie joined local band The Parrots. David joined The Parrots as well later on for a brief period. The Parrots won the 95SX Homegrown II competition and moved on to the regional round of the Miller Beer Rock to Riches Talent Search. The Parrots were inducted into the Lowcountry Music Hall of Fame in 2018. Mike & David, along with former members of Free Mountain Standstill, formed Old Friends and High Steaks, which morphed into All Purpose Remedy, now known as Remedy. During this time Howie joined Atlanta-based CRUIS-O-MATIC, touring with them until 1990.
From 1996 until 2006, Howie & David played in local band Flyin’ Blind, which featured Charlie Thompson, formerly of Free Mountain Standstill & The Parrots, among other bands. In 2019 John Tobin & Don Moxley, another Free Mountain Standstill alumn, planted the seed that grew into Hoodoo Highball, adding Howie & David to the mix. The band went through a couple of bass players before adding Mike, and through a few lead singers before deciding to handle the lead vocals themselves. All four members are seasoned lead vocalists, so now the Hoodoo sound is more organic, and the band is having more fun and looking forward to entertaining you at your next event.
